5-Day Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

From $ 1,970 pp

Duration: 5 Days

Tour Type: Hiking

Trip Overview

The 5-day Kilimanjaro Marangu Route is a shorter climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, taking trekkers through tropical rainforest, open moorland, and the high-altitude alpine desert before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres above sea level. Known as the Coca-Cola Route, Marangu is popular for its established trail and mountain hut accommodation, allowing climbers to sleep in shared huts rather than tents throughout the trek.

During the journey, you will experience the changing landscapes of Kilimanjaro while enjoying views of its distinctive volcanic peaks. With the support of experienced mountain guides and porters, you will gradually make your way towards Kibo Hut before beginning the challenging overnight ascent to the summit. The five-day itinerary is suitable for trekkers seeking a shorter climbing schedule, although its limited acclimatization time makes it more demanding than the six-day option.

Itinerary In Details

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Marangu Gate, where you complete park registration and meet your mountain crew before setting off. The trail leads through a lush tropical rainforest filled with tall trees, ferns, and a variety of birdlife. As you walk beneath the forest canopy, your guide introduces you to the surrounding environment and helps you maintain a comfortable pace. The gradual climb provides a gentle introduction to the mountain before you arrive at Mandara Hut. After settling into your accommodation, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful forest surroundings before dinner.

  • Elevation: 1,870 m to 2,720 m
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 8 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Habitat: Rainforest
  • Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest and continue climbing into the moorland zone. The vegetation gradually changes to open heathland, with giant heathers and distinctive high-altitude plants lining parts of the trail. As you gain height, the landscape opens up to reveal impressive views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks on clear days. The trail continues steadily towards Horombo Hut, located at approximately 3,720 metres. Upon arrival, you can relax, enjoy your meal, and prepare for the following day’s climb. Since this itinerary moves directly to a higher camp without a separate acclimatization day, walking slowly and monitoring how you feel are particularly important.

  • Elevation: 2,720 m to 3,720 m
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 12 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
  • Habitat: Moorland
  • Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

After breakfast, you continue towards Kibo Hut, crossing the broad alpine saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail passes through an increasingly dry landscape, where the vegetation becomes sparse and rocky ground dominates the surroundings. As you climb higher, the thinner air makes it important to maintain a slow, comfortable pace and take regular breaks. You arrive at Kibo Hut, your final overnight stop before the summit attempt. After an early dinner, your guides brief you on the upcoming climb, and you prepare your clothing, headlamp, water, and other essential equipment before resting for a few hours.

  • Elevation: 3,720 m to approximately 4,703 m
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 10 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
  • Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Horombo Hut

The summit attempt begins around midnight, when you leave Kibo Hut and start the steep climb towards Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. The trail crosses loose volcanic gravel, and the cold temperatures, darkness, and high altitude make this the most challenging part of the trek. After reaching Gilman’s Point, you continue along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. If conditions allow, you can enjoy the sunrise over the surrounding glaciers and mountain landscape while celebrating your achievement at the highest point in Africa.

After spending time at the summit, you begin the descent to Kibo Hut for a short rest and refreshments. You then continue downhill to Horombo Hut, where you spend the night. This is an exceptionally long hiking day, combining the summit ascent with a substantial descent, so following your guide’s instructions and maintaining a careful pace is essential.

  • Elevation: Approximately 4,703 m to 5,895 m at Uhuru Peak, then down to 3,720 m
  • Hiking Time: Approximately 12–16 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 16–21 km
  • Difficulty: Very Challenging
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert, Arctic Summit Zone, and Moorland
  • Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, you begin the final descent from Horombo Hut towards Marangu Gate. The trail takes you through the open moorland before returning to the lush rainforest at lower elevations. Along the way, you can enjoy the greener surroundings and reflect on your journey to the summit. On reaching the gate, you complete the park formalities and receive your summit certificate if you reached the required summit point. Your vehicle then transfers you to your hotel in Moshi, where you can relax and celebrate completing your Kilimanjaro adventure.

  • Elevation: Approximately 3,720 m to 1,870 m
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 20 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate
