Itinerary In Details

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Machame Gate, where registration and park formalities take place before the hike starts. The trail winds through a dense tropical rainforest filled with colourful birds, unique plants, and the occasional sighting of monkeys. As you make your way uphill, your guide introduces you to the natural surroundings and helps you settle into the rhythm of mountain trekking. After several hours on the trail, you arrive at Machame Camp, where you can relax, enjoy your evening meal, and prepare for the next day.

  • Elevation: 1,800 m to 2,835 m
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Distance: 11 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Habitat: Rainforest
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and continue climbing towards the Shira Plateau. The trail becomes steeper as the vegetation gradually gives way to open moorland, revealing wider views of the surrounding landscape. As you gain elevation, you may enjoy impressive views of Kibo, one of Kilimanjaro’s main volcanic peaks and your destination for summit day. By the end of the hike, you reach Shira Camp, situated in an open landscape with beautiful mountain scenery. Spend the evening resting and allowing your body to adjust to the altitude.

  • Elevation: 2,835 m to 3,850 m
  • Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
  • Distance: 5 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Habitat: Moorland
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Today’s trek takes you across the high-altitude landscape on the southern side of Kilimanjaro. Leaving Shira Camp, you cross open moorland and continue towards Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,600 metres above sea level. The terrain becomes increasingly rocky and dry as you approach this striking volcanic formation. After spending time at the higher elevation, you descend towards Barranco Camp at around 3,900 metres. This approach follows the important acclimatization principle of climbing high and sleeping lower, helping your body adjust to the altitude. You arrive at camp surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, ready to rest after a demanding day.

  • Elevation: 3,850 m to 4,600 m at Lava Tower, then down to 3,900 m
  • Hiking Time: 7–8 hours
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The day begins with a descent into the Great Barranco before the trail climbs towards the famous Barranco Wall. This steep section involves scrambling over rocks and requires careful footing, although no technical climbing skills are normally needed. Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with magnificent views of the mountain and the valleys below. The trail continues along the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro, passing beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers before descending into the Karanga Valley. After reaching Karanga Camp, you can rest, enjoy your meal, and prepare for the next stage of the climb.

  • Elevation: 3,900 m to approximately 3,995 m
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: 5 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast, you leave Karanga Camp and continue towards Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. The trail crosses steep, rocky slopes with little vegetation, and the increasing altitude makes the climb more demanding. Take your time, maintain a steady pace, and drink plenty of water as you make your way towards camp. Upon arrival, you can enjoy a meal and spend the afternoon resting while your guides prepare you for the summit climb. An early dinner is followed by an attempt to sleep before waking around midnight to begin the final ascent.

  • Elevation: 3,995 m to 4,673 m
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: 4 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Millennium Camp

Summit day begins around midnight, when you set off under the stars for the most demanding part of the trek. The trail climbs steadily over loose volcanic scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim, at approximately 5,739 metres. Reaching this point around sunrise offers spectacular views of the glaciers, the crater, and the distant peak of Mawenzi. From Stella Point, you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. Take time to celebrate your achievement and enjoy the remarkable views before beginning the descent.

You return towards Barafu Camp, where you can rest and have something to eat before continuing downhill to Millennium Camp. The long ascent and descent make this the most physically demanding day of the climb, so following your guide’s instructions and maintaining a steady pace are essential.

  • Elevation: 4,673 m to 5,895 m at Uhuru Peak, then down to approximately 3,100 m
  • Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 19 km
  • Difficulty: Very Challenging
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert, Arctic Summit Zone, and upper forest on descent
Day 7: Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, you begin the final descent through Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest towards Mweka Gate. The trail becomes greener as you lose elevation, providing a welcome change after several days in the mountain’s dry, rocky upper zones. Upon reaching the gate, you complete the park formalities and receive your summit certificate if you reached the required summit point. Your mountain team then arranges your transfer back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can enjoy a hot shower, relax, and celebrate completing your seven-day Kilimanjaro adventure.

  • Elevation: Approximately 3,100 m to 1,640 m
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 10 km
  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
  • Habitat: Rainforest
