6-Day Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

Duration: 6 Days

Tour Type: Hiking

Trip Overview

The 6-day Kilimanjaro Marangu Route offers a memorable journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, taking climbers through tropical rainforest, open moorland, and the rugged alpine desert before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres above sea level. Known as the Coca-Cola Route, Marangu is the only standard Kilimanjaro route that uses mountain huts instead of tents for overnight accommodation. The six-day itinerary includes an additional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, giving climbers more time to adjust to the increasing altitude before continuing towards the summit.

Throughout the trek, experienced mountain guides and supportive porters help you navigate the changing terrain and prepare for each stage of the climb. From walking beneath the rainforest canopy to enjoying views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, every day brings a new perspective of the mountain. The final ascent to Uhuru Peak is physically demanding, but reaching the highest point in Africa makes the effort worthwhile. The Marangu Route is an excellent option for climbers who prefer hut accommodation and a well-established trail.

Itinerary In Details

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Marangu Gate, where you complete park registration and meet your mountain crew before setting off. The trail leads through a lush tropical rainforest filled with tall trees, ferns, and a variety of birdlife. As you walk beneath the forest canopy, your guide introduces you to the surrounding environment and helps you maintain a comfortable pace. The gradual climb provides a gentle introduction to the mountain before you arrive at Mandara Hut. After settling into your accommodation, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful forest surroundings before dinner.

  • Elevation: 1,870 m to 2,720 m
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 8 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Habitat: Rainforest
  • Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and continue into the open moorland zone. The trail passes through changing vegetation, including giant heathers and distinctive high-altitude plants, as the landscape becomes more exposed. On clear days, you may enjoy views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks rising above the surrounding plains. The steady ascent takes you towards Horombo Hut, situated at approximately 3,720 metres. Upon arrival, you have time to rest, enjoy your meals, and prepare for the additional acclimatization day ahead.

  • Elevation: 2,720 m to 3,720 m
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 12 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Habitat: Moorland
  • Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Today is dedicated to acclimatization, helping your body adapt to the thinner air before you climb higher. After breakfast, you take a guided hike towards the area around Zebra Rocks or another suitable higher point, depending on conditions and your guide’s advice. The walk offers views of Kilimanjaro’s rugged slopes and the surrounding high-altitude landscape. After reaching the planned elevation, you return to Horombo Hut for lunch and an afternoon of rest. Spending an additional night here provides more time to adjust to the altitude before continuing towards Kibo Hut and the summit.

  • Elevation: Horombo Hut at approximately 3,720 m, with a higher acclimatization hike
  • Hiking Time: Approximately 3–5 hours
  • Distance: Varies according to the acclimatization route
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Habitat: Moorland
  • Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

After breakfast, you leave Horombo Hut and continue towards Kibo Hut, crossing the broad saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape gradually becomes drier, with fewer plants and increasingly rocky terrain as you enter the alpine desert zone. The trail is relatively gradual in places, but the increasing altitude makes it important to walk slowly and conserve energy. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, you have a meal, organize your summit equipment, and receive a briefing from your guides about the overnight climb. An early dinner and rest prepare you for the final ascent, which usually begins around midnight.

  • Elevation: 3,720 m to 4,703 m
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 10 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
  • Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Horombo Hut

The summit attempt begins around midnight, when you leave Kibo Hut and start climbing the steep trail towards Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. The ascent is slow and demanding because of the loose volcanic gravel, cold temperatures, and high altitude. After reaching Gilman’s Point, you continue along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. As the sun rises, the surrounding glaciers and distant mountain landscapes create an unforgettable setting for photographs and a moment to celebrate your achievement.

After spending time at the summit, you begin the descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and refreshments. You then continue down the trail to Horombo Hut, where you spend the night. Although the descent is rewarding, this is a long and physically demanding day, so following your guide’s pace and instructions is essential.

  • Elevation: 4,703 m to 5,895 m at Uhuru Peak, then down to approximately 3,720 m
  • Hiking Time: Approximately 12–16 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 16–21 km
  • Difficulty: Very Challenging
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert, Arctic Summit Zone, and Moorland
  • Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, you begin the final descent from Horombo Hut towards Marangu Gate. The trail takes you back through the moorland and into the lush rainforest, where the air becomes warmer and the vegetation grows thicker. Along the way, you can reflect on the journey and the achievement of reaching Kilimanjaro’s summit. Once you arrive at the gate, you complete the park formalities and receive your summit certificate if you reached the required summit point. Your vehicle then transfers you to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved shower and rest.

  • Elevation: Approximately 3,720 m to 1,870 m
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 20 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Habitat: Moorland and Rainforest
  • Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi, after the trek
